What is IEDC?
The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centres (IEDC) are the entities set up in various Engineering, Management, Arts & Science Colleges and Polytechnics with an aim to provide an exciting platform for experimentation and innovation. At National Institute of Technology, Calicut, IEDC serve as a key platform for fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among students. The Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), the former Technopark TBI, acts as the nodal agency of the Kerala government for entrepreneurship development and incubation activities in the State and it has set up IEDCs in 193 Institutions across the State. IEDC stands as an enabler in promoting Entrepreneurship among students by converting innovative ideas from the ideation phase to commercially viable products/ services.
Objectives of IEDC at NITC
IEDC stands for nurturing the creative and innovative ideas of students and help them transform these ideas into feasible products and services. IEDC acts as the first launch pad for a student’s entrepreneurial journey and provides them with access to cutting-edge technology, world-class infrastructure, high-quality mentorship, early risk capital and global exposure.
IEDC also provide opportunities for the student community by organizing various IEDC events in association with KSUM and various other agencies like ICT Academy of Kerala (ICTAK). Various kinds of training in business planning, product designing, frontier technology domains and product presentation skills will be provided in collaboration with the various industry partners. Several workshops and competitions would be organized both at institutional and regional levels so as to identify the top aspiring student startups. Several other events like hackathons and ideathons to be organized and facilitated by IEDC are also expected to contribute to the entrepreneurial interests of the students.
The students will have a platform to showcase their innovations, share their success stories, learn from each other’s failures, meet up with like-minded individuals and develop networks that may eventually turn out as long-term successful businesses.
With the highly valuable industry knowledge and insights from industry experts and the monitoring, mentoring and handholding of students by TBI and KSUM, it is expected to ensure the evolution of Startups with a Vision, social responsibility, innovativeness and sustainability.
IEDC Team at NITC
As a mechanism to ensure proper implementation and execution of IEDC, National Institute of Technology, Calicut has a monitoring committee constituting Director or his nominee– Chairperson, Deputy Registrar Finance, a representative each from the college alumni, industry, student community and a representative from KSUM.
We also have a dedicated IEDC team under the mentorship of TBI NITC to coordinate on the various IEDC programs/ initiatives. TBI NITC, having its decade-long experience in mentoring entrepreneurs, provides a good platform for the innovative students to take their dream forward.
Apart from the TBI team, there is a Faculty Nodal Officer who will associate in the activities of IEDC. The nodal officer will also be assisted by a team of IEDC student coordinators who will carry out the various activities pertaining to IEDC.

Mentoring Session for the Students of NITC @ TBI Office

TBI-NITC Calicut as one of the initiatives of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Cell (IEDC) has conducted a Mentoring Session for the students of NIT Calicut who got shortlisted in the business plan competition conducted by IEDC, Tathva Interface AND TARANG on 11 October 2018 (Thursday) from 4.30 till 6.30 pm at TBI-NITC.
A common mentoring session for all the participants was done. Following were the points of discussion on the points to be highlighted in a pitching competition.

TBI-NITC Calicut with the support of KSUM and in association with TATHVA Interface and TARANG (the official interface group of the B. Tech students and the cultural fest group of the School of Management Studies NITC respectively) had organized a workshop on the topic, “IEDC WORKSHOP – A Comprehensive Understanding of the Start up Strategies” for the students of NIT Calicut on 5 October 2018 (Friday) from 2.00 till 4.00 pm at Chanakya hall, NITC.
The programme was started with an introduction by Ms. Preethi M, Manager, TBI-NITC. This was followed by a welcome speech by Dr. Ashok S, Chairman TBI and Dean (Research & Consultancy). The inaugural speech was delivered by Dr. Madhavan Pillai, Director-In Charge, NITC. The major highlights of the programme were the two great Speakers, Dr. Saji Gopinath, CEO, Kerala Startup Mission and Shri. Shilen Sagunan, Chief Consultant, SS Consulting both of whom were introduced by Ms. Preethi M, Manager, TBI. Vote of Thanks of the programme inauguration was given by Dr. T.K Suresh Babu, Professor, School of Management Studies. This was followed by a Speech and a question and answer session of about forty five minutes by Dr. Saji Gopinath on the topic, Ideation and Growth of Start ups from Academia. The session was a fabulous one with the audience being described about the extent to which the social angle is tapped, the extent to which the business angle is exploited and the huge potential of opportunities lying in the technology part which actually needs to be addressed by the upcoming/ future startups. As a value addition to the speech delivered by Dr. Saji Gopinath, Shri Shilen Sagunan, in his speech on the topic “Expectation of Investors”, took the audience through the various angles from an investor’s perspective in evaluating a startup. Shri. Shilen’s Speech was a great source of information for both the prospective startups/ the prospective individuals with an inclination of venturing into the Startups and the young minds with an interest of Investing in Startups.
Both Dr. Saji Gopinath’s as well as Shri. Shilen Sagunan’s sessions turned out as a source of motivation for the listeners according to the feed backs received at the end of the workshop. Shri. Shilen Sagunan’s session was followed by a question and answer session after which the workshop was concluded at 4.15 pm.

Orientation Programme

TBI-NITC Calicut with the support of KSUM has organized an Orientation Programme on Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Cell (IEDC) for the students of NIT Calicut on 8 August 2018 (Wednesday) from 5.30 till 7.30 pm as an event prior to the official launch of IEDC at NITC at the Seminar Hall of ECE department, block II.
The programme was started with an introduction by Saranya, Technical Officer, TBI, NIT, Calicut. This was followed by a welcome speech by Dr. S. Ashok, Chairman TBI and Dean (Research & Consultancy). There were two sessions in the programme. The first session on “IEDC and Student Entrepreneurship” was taken by Moosa Mehar, the former Project coordinator at KSUM. The second session on Virtual and Augmented Reality” was handled by Mr. Dheeraj Mohan, Technical Expert in Augmented Reality/ Virtual Reality. Following this, the role of TBI in IEDC and the IEDC programs to be planned in NITC were briefed by Anju Anie George, Assistant Manager, TBI. This was followed by the entrepreneurial experience sharing sessions by the IEDC student coordinators Jagdish Panda and Ashik Hameed.
There were a total of 61 student participants from the various graduation and post-graduation streams out of a total of 87 participants who registered online.
All the sessions were informative and knowledgeable. We received good feedback on the demo session (Orenda AR/ VR) to taken by Dheeraj.
This event being the first official event of IEDC at NITC has been a great success with the kind of student participation & interaction. A total of 43 IEDC membership forms circulated among the participants were duly filled in and returned by those participants who were interested to be a part of IEDC.
